Clayton Newman House

New Brighton, Christchurch

A family in New Brighton Christchurch, approached me to design them a new home to replace their earthquake damaged 1920's house. The site had been already subdivided a decade ago with access and other easements making the site even smaller. A compact 3 bedroom home of just 114m² was called for with separate garage and decks to provide outdoor living amenity.

The clients were interested in passive solar design but this site faces NE / NW so my solution was to snipe off a corner of the living space, actually the Dining area, to provide a large north facing glazing area. 2.7m ceiling heights with high window heads in the main living spaces provide high comfort along with wool insulated 140 thick exterior walls and an exposed fully insulated concrete slab floor.

A nice feature in the Living room to recycle at least a part of the old house, is a used clay brick feature wall, 2.4m high, to provide additional thermal mass to the home.
