Blackstock / Jehle House

Atamai Eco Village, Motueka River Valley

My clients had moved from Waiheke Island to Atamai Eco Village in the Motueka River valley and had asked me to design a modest home for them that would be warm and cozy, energy efficient and blend well with the natural environment. The result is a 2 bedroom home with home office of 139m² with an additional 24m² in covered porches. The house is clad in locally milled redwood board on board to a stained finish, fixed over 45mm walings over Douglas fir framing, to reduce thermal bridging. Vaulted ceilings with clerestory windows in the Kitchen/Dining space let in plenty of natural light.

Full levels of Wool insulation are used in walls and ceiling and even the waling cavity is filled with polyester batts. The floor is exposed concrete fully insulated under and around the foundation. Passive solar gain is utilised in the main living spaces with several adobe veneer feature walls adding thermal mass to the exposed slab floor. A large log burner stove in the kitchen provides back up heat, cooking and hot water heating with a Sunz solar panel aiding hot water production. The home also features an indoor BioLoo composting toilet while a site grey water system treats other wastewater.
